Citizen Alleges Campaign Violations by Sheriff
08/17/2012

(KAIR) -- A concerned citizen has made public allegations that Atchison County’s Sheriff has violated a Kansas election campaign law.

Rural Atchison resident Richard Lee, Junior presented documents at Wednesday’s Atchison County Commissioner meeting alleging misuse of county property and employees.

The documents included a copy of Chapter 25, Article 41 of Kansas Statutes, as well as a photo of Sheriff John Calhoon in the Atchison County Fair parade on August 7th, next to a sheriff patrol car with a uniformed deputy driving.

The allegation in question is if Calhoon used the car and on-duty deputy, which is property of the county and employee of the county, in a way to promote his candidacy for Sheriff in the fall elections, or if the entry was part of the Atchison County Sheriff’s department.

Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon made this statement in response to the allegations.
