Calhoon Seeks 5th Term for Sheriff
05/30/2012

Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon is seeking a fifth full term as county Sheriff.

Calhoon filed Wednesday morning for the Democratic nomination.

So far, he is the first on that ticket for the position.

Calhoon took the office by appointment on April 1, 1994 and is the longest serving Sheriff in the history of the county.

His law enforcement career spans 27 years.

In a press release, Calhoon says “my staff and I have worked through many changes and challenges over the years and I feel that experience will make me the most qualified candidate in this year’s election.”

He also says he aims to be community minded and be a Sheriff for “all the people.”

Currently, Atchison Police Officer Jack Laurie is the only other candidate that has filed.

Laurie is seeking the Republican nomination.

Candidates have until noon on June 1st to file.
