(KAIR) -- The undergraduate chemistry program at Benedictine College has received approval from the American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society and a leading source of authoritative scientific information.
A member of the Committee on Professional Training of the ACS visited the Benedictine campus last year and submitted a report that concluded that the college’s chemistry program meets the spirit and intent of the ACS guidelines for approved schools.
Benedictine Chemistry majors have been members of the society in the past and now students who graduate from Benedictine’s Chemistry program can receive an additional certification from the ACS.
The ACS Committee on Professional Training stated that the college’s chemistry program is on a “very solid trajectory.”
They recommended that the faculty continue to expand their research activities involving undergraduates, which the Benedictine Discovery Program promotes on an annual basis.
The committee also commented on the need for improved facilities and instrumentation, including an NMR spectrometer.
Inclusion on the ACS approved list is not granted for a defined period.
All approved schools are required to submit annual reports on chemistry faculty and course offerings and must submit a more extensive report every five years.
A nonprofit organization chartered by Congress, ACS has more than 164,000 members.
