(KAIR) -- The third annual remembrance the U.S.S. Arizona attack will take place Friday in Atchison, coinciding with Pearl Harbor Day.
The program, coordinated by the Atchison VFW, will begin at noon at Veterans Memorial Park along the riverfront on Commercial Street.
The U.S.S. Arizona was one of the 14 ships and battleships that were sunk by Japanese aircrafts in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
Retired Naval Lieutenant Flight Commander Fred Gage is one of the coordinators of the event.
He says having a program in this region has its own significance.

A relic of the found wreckage of the U.S.S. Arizona has been on display in the park since 2010, thanks to a merit project of Boy Scout Lawton Huffman of Weston.
Gage says a lot of effort takes place as caretakers for upkeep of the relic.

The 25 minute program will include a presentation about the U.S.S. Arizona, as well as the name reading of Kansas crew members lost by Retired Navy Warrant Officer Four James Madden.
Any other veterans present at the ceremony will then be invited to come forward and read a crew members name, followed by ROTC rifle team honors and the playing of the taps.
Gage says the program only had four in attendance in 2010 and grew to 75 in 2011.
He hopes the free and open to the public event will increase again this year.
