Effort Started to Save Historic Atchison Post Office

(KAIR) -- In an effort to save the historic Atchison Post Office, entrances have been secured to make it safe for patrons to enter.

The dry, hot summer has made exterior parts of the 1892 structure that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places deteriorate.

Postmaster Tara Jarrett explains.

Jarrett says the structures are temporary but doesn’t have a timetable on when they will be removed.

She says the problem lies within the limestone.

Jarrett says the post office is one of the few known buildings remaining in the Midwest that is made out of limestone.
