Missouri Primary Election Tuesday
08/06/2012

There are many primary races shaping up in Holt County Missouri.  The Missouri Primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7th.
On the Republican ticket, two candidates are challenging incumbent Sheriff Scott Wedlock, David Trauernicht and former Sheriff Kirby Felumb.  Michael Freeman is challenging incumbent Bill Gordon for the 1st District County Commission seat; and Julie McCully and LaDonna Jones are running in the Republican Primary for Holt County Assessor.  Current Assessor Carla Markt is not seeking another term.
No Democrats are running for those countywide offices, so the winner of the primary election will run unopposed in November’s general election.
The only Democratic Party race locally in Holt County is for County Commissioner in the 2nd District, where David Carroll is challenging incumbent Don Holstine.  No Republican is seeking that position.
There are a couple contested primary races in Atchison County Missouri Tuesday.
Five Republicans and two Democrats are seeking their party’s nomination for County Commissioner in the Southern District, where incumbent Kent Fisher is not seeking another term.
Republicans on the ballot are Tim Taylor, Brian Tharp, Alva Stoner, Britt Harmon, and Dale Dickkut.
Richard Burke and Jack Vernon are seeking the Democratic nomination.
All other county officeholders in Atchison County are running unopposed.  On the Republican side, they are Northern District Commissioner David Chapin and Coroner Shawn Minter.  Jayne Scott is the only candidate running for Public Administrator to replace Karen Lester who is not running for reelection.
Democratic incumbents running unopposed in Atchison County are Sheriff Dennis Martin and Assessor Lori Jones.
Voters in both Tarkio and Fairfax will decide whether to impose local use taxes.  The use tax would be the same rate as the local sales tax in each community.  That is currently two-percent in Tarkio and one-percent in Fairfax.
There are several other notable races shaping statewide up in Missouri.
On the Republican side, there are eight candidates on the ballot seeking their party’s nod to run against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in November.  There are four Republican candidates seeking the nomination for Governor, three candidates running in the primary against incumbent Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, three candidates running for Secretary of State, and two candidates running for Attorney General.
Two Republicans – Bob Gough and Christopher Ryan – are running against 6th District Congressman Sam Graves.
On the Democratic ballot, there are two challengers to incumbent Governor Jay Nixon; eight candidates are seeking their party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor; two candidates are running for Secretary of State; and four candidates are seeking the Democratic Party nomination for U.S. Representative in the newly formed 6th District.
