(KAIR) -- Atchison’s Public Works Director has announced his retirement.
Gary Heer served as director since December 2006, and has been responsible for an aggressive capital campaign to upgrade Atchison’s streets, curbs, and sidewalks.
During his tenure, Heer also provided management and oversight for numerous projects including the upgrade of the Commercial Street Mall, the installation of silent train crossings, and significant highway improvement projects.
Heer’s retirement took effect Monday.
The City will begin the search for Heer’s replacement, and hopes to have the new department director in place by the end of this summer.
The City plans to conduct interviews for an Interim Director of Public Works and will have a further announcement regarding the temporary position at a later date.
