Martin East School Rezone Moves Forward
05/02/2013

(KAIR) -- A proposal to rezone a historic Atchison school has moved forward.

The Atchison Planning Commission Wednesday voted six to zero to recommend to the City Commission rezoning the former Martin East Elementary School from single family residential to multiple family residential in an effort to turn the building into an apartment complex.

Dennis Bradley is part of the partnership group looking to renovate the building.

He hopes to turn the building into 24 units running from 450 to 980 dollars.

Bradley added that they have conducted a traffic study and says this conversion would not cause a large disruption in traffic flow.

Five people then spoke in opposition, including Cheryl Lynn, who lives caddy corner to the school.

Others indicated concerns with access to parking, as well as concerns with asbestos.

Bradley said he is aware of that the building has asbestos in it and has already submitted an application with the Environmental Protection Agency for proper removal.

Planning Commissioners recommended this to the City Commission with an amendment that Bradley provide further information for a site plan review in August, pending City Commissioner approval on June 3rd.

If the rezone is finalized after the August meeting, Bradley plans to begin construction with a target completion date of early next year.
