09/28/2012

(KAIR) -- A memorial mass is set for a former alum and head coach of Benedictine College.

George F. Tardiff of Brick, N.J., passed away September 21st at the age of 75.

He was a standout football player at St. Benedict's College and went on to try out for the Buffalo Bills in 1960.

In 1974, he returned to Benedictine College as the head football coach and a physical education instructor. In 1976, Coach Tardiff led the Ravens to a 24-19 victory over Washburn University in the Boot Hill Bowl at Dodge City, Kan.

In 2003, he was inducted into the Raven Athletic Hall of Fame.

Coach Tardiff was instrumental in bringing several East Coast students to Benedictine College.

He contacted former players and friends by letter to fund-raise for Benedictine College, and for numerous years he provided names of high school student-athletes to Benedictine recruiters and shared newspaper and magazine articles with College administrators.

Benedictine College will honor him with a Memorial Mass Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the Abbey Church.

This replaces the 5:15 Mass for the day.
