Much Interest in Pawnee City Budget Discussion
08/15/2012

(KTNC) - About 50 people packed into the Union Bank basement for the Pawnee City Council meeting Monday night.  They were interested in hearing the budget discussion between council members and Auditor Julie Bauman – specifically regarding proposed cuts to all department budgets.
Bauman said the city is not in financial “dire straights,” but they have to curtail spending or they will be eventually.  City Clerk Tammy Stephens explains.  (play audio  :18)
Stephens says Pawnee City cut its budget substantially last year, and council members met with Bauman individually this year to hammer out budget numbers.  Stephens says there will be cuts to every department’s budget.  (play audio  :17)
Much of the discussion Monday night centered on proposed cuts to the Library budget.  Stephens says the 21-percent cut amounts to about the same amount of the salary of the part-time Library Assistant.  (play audio  23)
Stephens says the proposed cut to the Library budget is one of the smallest cuts of all department budgets, and she says there has never been any discussion on closing the Library.
The Pawnee City Council will get its first look at the draft budget at its next meeting on August 27th.
