(KLZA)-- Falls City Chamber of Commerce / Main Street Director David Branch approached the City Council this week about moving forward with replacing the sidewalk on the west side of 1500 block of Stone Street.
Branch suggested that while part of the sidewalk is already torn up because of improvements being made to a building at the south end of the block, it might be and advantage to have the City, Main Street and Library Foundation fund the project now.
The cost to do the west side of the block is $54,000. Branch suggested doing at least half the block could save some money by not having to re-do the same area with grant funds at a later date.
The City approved an application for $350,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds Monday night, and plans call for a good portion of the grant money to be used for sidewalk repairs in the downtown area. However, the grant requires a 25-percent match, and until the grant has been approved, money spent on sidewalk repair would not count toward the matching funds.
Branch said that the grant, will not be enough to improve all the sidewalks that need attention in the downtown area. He said by doing the west side of the 1500 block of Stone Street now, it might allow more sidewalks to be upgraded with grant monies.
The Council pointed out that there is no engineers plan for how the sidewalks that are improved are going to look and that they would want it all to match.
The Council tabled the agenda item until more information can be gathered, or the grant is awarded.
