(KAIR) -- The new state law that requires concealed carry weapons to be allowed in state and municipal buildings for concealed carry permit holders will be allowed to go into effect in the city of Atchison July 1st.
That comes as a result of the Atchison City Commission not taking any action following a 30 minute executive session Monday night.
The only visible difference will be that the “no weapons” sign outside of city-owned buildings--such as City Hall, the Heritage Conference Center and Santa Fe Depot--will come down on that day.
Vice-Mayor Allen Reavis says that since those allowed to carry have already applied for a permit, safety is less of a concern.
Police Chief Mike Wilson says the job for law enforcement is to enforce the laws passed down by the state, whatever they may be or no matter what position someone may hold on the issue.
Meanwhile, in Atchison County, Commission Chairman Jeff Schuele says Commissioners are scheduled to discuss what direction they will go on the new law in meetings the last week in June.
