(KAIR) -- A project that would expand the walking and biking trail along the Atchison Riverfront to the Lewis and Clark Campsite will go on hold after the city doesn't get selected for a state grant.
The Kansas Department of Transportation recently selected 35 projects for inclusion in its Transportation Enhancement program.
Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking says they plan to go to back to the drawing board and plan to apply for the grant again next year.
He also says city staff will plan to search for alternatives in an attempt to fund the project in the meantime.
The estimated 825 thousand dollar project could have had up to 80 percent matched by KDOT.
A resolution of funding support unanimously passed City Commissioners in December and passed the County Commission in February two to one with Commissioner Bill Pohl voting nay.
The project would have extended the River Road trail two-point-eight miles to the Lewis and Clark Campsite.
