Atchison Signal Will Stop Flashing
08/28/2012

(KAIR) -- During harvest season each year, the City of Atchison sets the traffic signal at 6th Street and US-59 to flashing red and yellow.

This is done so that farmers hauling their produce to market don’t have to stop their trucks on an incline at the red light.

However, traffic at this intersection has increased and the attempt to help local farmers has caused confusion with motorists unfamiliar with the setting.

In response to motorist concerns, the City’s public safety officials studied the intersection.

After observing the traffic flow, officials have determined that the flashing setting is causing a traffic safety issue and the signal will be returned to its normal setting.

On August 22nd, the traffic signal was changed to flashing red and yellow with the expectation that it would remain at this setting through harvest.

If motorists are stopped at the red light at 6th and US-59, city officials ask you please be mindful of the steep grade and leave plenty of room between yourself and the motorist stopped in front of you.
