Atchison Plans for Hot Conditions at Amelia Festival
07/18/2012

(KAIR) -- In preparation for hot temperatures this weekend at the Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison, organizers and first responders are preparing to keep people cool and to respond immediately if they don’t.

Area forecasts range temperatures from 98 to 102 degrees for Thursday through Saturday.

Festival coordinator Jacque Pregont says cups of water will be provided to those who need it Friday night at Warnock Lake for the Lakefest concert.

For Saturday activities, she says there are several area businesses that are near the entertainment and booths downtown that will be open for cooling off.

Pregont says Atchison Ambulance is planning on misting tents both at the lake and on the riverfront.

On Saturday night for the fireworks show along the riverfront, coolers will be allowed, as long as the content doesn’t contain glass.

Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson reminds patrons that common sense must be used because of the heat.

However, if a situation does arise or someone appears to need assistance, a plan is in place to respond.

Wilson says the plan will remain in full effect on Saturday as well.

He adds most of the festivals since its inception have boasted high temperatures, however, Wilson says there haven’t been serious medical situations that have arisen from the heat.
