Pawnee City Council Blight and Substandard Resolution

The Pawnee City Council approved two resolutions following a public hearing Tuesday evening. One resolution declared an area as blighted and substandard, and the other resolution approved the redevelopment plan.
City Clerk Tammy Stephens explains two areas were declared as blighted and substandard. One is on the west side of Highway 50 on the north edge of town, and the other is along 14th Street going to the ball fields, along with a few other tracts. (play audio :25)
The city is inviting private developers to submit redevelopment proposals for the area they hope to redevelop.
The council reached a compromise on a proposal to close a portion of K Street. As Stephens explains, K Street is a platted city street, but is essentially a path that the city does not maintain. A woman who lives in the area wants to build a new garage – which would violate setback requirements. (play audio :27)
Stephens says some neighbors said they didn’t want the street closed, as it provides access to their property.
In other business, the Pawnee City Council approved a motion to renew its health insurance policy with Blue Cross Blue Shield. There will be no premium increase in the next year.
The council approved a motion to hire Olivia Weinman as a part-time City Office Clerk. Weinman was one of 10 applicants for the position.
The council approved the Ag Society’s request for a special designated liquor license during the Pawnee County Fair.
The Pawnee City Pool opened for the season Saturday. A handicap lift has not been installed yet, as required under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Stephens says the lift has been ordered but the company that manufactures the lift cannot meet demand, so it’s on back-order for now. (play audio :23)
Pawnee City Pool hours are the same as last year. The pool is open seven days a week until six p.m. most days. The pool is open until eight p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Deepwater aerobics are offered at 10 a.m. on Monday and Friday and six p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Swim lessons are scheduled the weeks of July 9th and July 16th.
