Rep. Jenkins Tours Missouri River with Corps
05/01/2012

Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins toured the Missouri River flood zone with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Anthony J. Hofmann, Commander of Kansas City District of the Corps Tuesday morning.

The tour was conducted on the river via watercraft, and started at St. Joseph and ended at Atchison.

Once docked in Atchison they held a public meeting at the Lewis and Clark Pavilion, update residents on the status of flood rehabilitation efforts within the lower Missouri River Basin.

This tour by Jenkins was prompted by the flooding result of 2011, and Jenkins is working in a group in Congress with other lawmakers on legislation.

Founded in July of 2011, the Missouri River Working Group is a bipartisan Congressional working group that provides Missouri River communities a united voice when it comes to management of the Missouri River.

Congresswoman Jenkins was a founding member.

As one of her first actions as a member of the working group, Congresswoman Jenkins joined with Senator Roberts to introduce H.R. 2579, which would require the Army Corps of Engineers to take into account all precipitation data from this year’s record levels in the Missouri River basin when making any future plans to help reduce the risk of future flood events.
