(KLZA)-- Following a 45-minute discussion Monday night the Falls City Council voted 8-0 to limit parking to one side of the street on East 18th and East 19th Streets and Nemaha Avenue around the Sacred Heart School. The parking will be allowed only on the side adjacent to the Sacred Heart School property.
Sacred Heart Principal Doug Goltz proposed the idea Monday night, noting safety aspects and the school being a good neighbor.
In July, Mark Meyer presented a proposal to limit parking to one side of the street not only around the school, but further out into the surrounding neighborhood, which he agreed to cut back some on Monday night. Meyer feels the parking limitations should extend beyond the blocks adjacent to the school.
City Administrator Gary Jorn said there are parking issues due to narrow streets all over town. He said until there is an issue, the no parking around the school would be a good start.
Goltz said Sacred Heart did not want neighbors to feel it was their idea to impose parking restrictions that would keep them from parking in front of their homes. He also asked the changes be made as soon as possible, to aid in the construction effort with the new activities center. The Council assured the several neighbors that spoke during the meeting if there are parking issues in the area, the topic could be revisited with revisions possible.
