(KAIR) -- Atchison Planning Commissioners unanimously recommended a denial Wednesday to the City Commission to have property re-zoned in the 21 hundred block of Forest Park Avenue from Single Family Residential to B-2 Highway Business District.
The owners of the property, Jerry Ernzen and John Thompson, indicated to city staff that they wanted to build storage units and units capable for auto body repair.
Commissioner Derek Franklin asked why they wanted to be classified as a highway business when they are over one thousand feet from the nearest highway.
Two neighbors to the property also spoke in opposition, concerning that the change would lower their property value.
In other business, Commissioners also unanimously approved both a site plan for MGP to build a maintenance building in the 13 hundred block of Commercial and a conditional use permit for Erin Bailey to operate a tarot card and spirit reading business out of her home at 719 U Street.
Planning Commissioners also moved their next meeting to July 10th due to the Independence Day holiday.
