(KAIR) -- A full house of concerned citizens is expected this afternoon for the next meeting of the Atchison City Commission.
That’s because Commissioners are expected to act on a proposal by Benedictine College to rezone property surrounding the college as planned development for future projects, which in the immediate future would re-locate the baseball and softball complexes north of Larry Wilcox Stadium on agricultural property donated to the school by the Asher family.
A citizens group spoke mostly in opposition for the measure for 90 minutes in early May before Planning Commissioners made the recommendation to City Commissioners to approve the re-zone six to zero, contingent on Benedictine to provide a more detailed site plan of the complexes.
BC officials submitted the plan to the city on May 28th which includes dimensions of sidewalks, fences and walls of the complexes.
City codes say that a plan “shall” be submitted to Commissioners 15 days before action.
Both Commissions would be acting on the measure prior to that and Community Development Director Stefanie Leif says that there have been instances in the past where Commissioners acted on a plan well under the 15 day window.
She confirms that both Commissions were given the new plan on Friday for review.
Planning Commissioners are expected to take final action on the P Street re-zone on Wednesday.
After the public hearing phase elapsed last month, it would be now up to the will of the Commission on whether citizens would be allowed to speak further in support or opposition.
Mayor Dave Butler this morning confirmed that he will allow any party to speak today, as long as the speeches and ideas aren’t repetitive in the interest of time.
The meeting will begin at 4:30 at City Hall.
