(KAIR) -- If the chips fall in the right places, the city of Atchison and parts of Atchison County will see new walking and biking sidewalk trails in the community.
City staff is planning to apply for a grant with the state by February 15th to help fund two different trails in and around Atchison.
City Manager Trey Cocking says the first one could be in south Atchison.

The second proposal will be an extension of the trail along the Missouri Riverfront on River Road, mostly on county property.

City officials on Wednesday went to County Commissioners to seek approval for the grant writing.
Commissioners approved a resolution unanimously to the concept and to pursue the grant, only without an early commitment to monetary figures.
Early estimates on the project are fairly steep with the city project at one point two million dollars, and the River Road project at 825 thousand dollars.
However, Cocking says if the grant is approved, most of the project cost will be covered.

Cocking is hopeful to learn about the grant awards by late spring or early summer.
