(KTNC) - The recycling trailer is a topic of discussion for the Pawnee City Council. During Monday’s meeting, the council discussed ways the city could cover the costs of maintaining the trailer and transporting recyclables to centers in either Lincoln or Seneca.
Pawnee City received a grant to help pay for the initial cost of acquiring the trailer. City Clerk Tammy Stephens says Pawnee City High School students may help maintain the trailer. (play audio :35)
Stephens says the recycling trailer is well used by people from Pawnee City and surrounding communities, and they have to haul the trailer to the recycling center often – sometimes weekly – and the transportation costs are adding up. One idea the council discussed to help cover the costs of the trailer is to add a small fee – 25 or 50 cents – to monthly water bills. Stephens says the discussion will continue later this month. Pawnee City currently takes the trailer to a center in Lincoln, which pays the city $100 every three months for the materials. The other regional recycling center is in Seneca, Kansas, and Stephens says they would not pay the city anything for the recyclables.
