The law enforcement agreement between Pawnee City and Pawnee County will apparently end at the end of July, after the Pawnee City Council approved a motion this week to turn down the County Commission’s offer of a four-and-a-half percent annual increase in the contract amount over the next three years.
Commissioners had originally proposed a six-percent increase and the city offered a three-percent increase. The county then came back with a counter offer of four-and-a-half percent.
The proposed contract was for just over $56,000 for the next fiscal year, increasing to $59,376 in 2013-14 and $62,939 in 2014-15.
The Sheriff’s Department will still enforce traffic laws in Pawnee City, as per state law. The city council is exploring the possibility of hiring a part-time code enforcement officer to enforce other city ordinances.
The current law enforcement agreement expires at the end of July.
