Planning Commissioners Deny Turbine Variance
06/07/2012

Atchison Planning Commissioners unanimously deny a variance for the construction of three wind turbines in a field near Atchison city limits Wednesday afternoon.

Michael Binder told Commissioners in the public hearing that his turbines imported from China were very strong and away from homes and businesses.

Commissioners cited concern that Binder’s turbines did not have stamped plans from a licensed engineer.

Commissioner Derek Franklin was concerned about setting a precedent if it passed.

Other Commissioners expressed support otherwise if Binder could provide the proper stamping.

Commissioners did unanimously approve an 80 foot turbine for Dr John Growney.

Commissioners also unanimously approved a variance for an increase in the size of a porch and construction of a garage at a residence at 1429 Atchison Street for Duane Denton.

Denton made his pitch for the variance prior to vote.
