The new Bartlett Grain Elevator in Atchison’s bins are poured and ready for the next stage of the project.
The concrete slip form was completed Thursday.
Slip form construction is a construction method in which concrete is poured into a continuously moving form.
It took a crew of 30 men five weeks to build the forms and two 110 man crews working alternating shifts 24 hours a day for six days to pour the concrete bins.
Throughout the pour, ten concrete trucks delivered ten cubic yards of concrete to the site every hour.
Over 30,000 pieces of hoop steel and 350 tons of rebar were used in the walls of the bins.
Over the next few weeks you will see wooden slip forms disassembled and removed, foundations for the bucket elevator structure and the dryer built, the concrete bin deck (roof) of the facility poured, the superintendent’s office and shop built, and equipment arriving for installation.
What won’t be visible from the camera will be the installation of the hopper bottoms for the concrete silos and the installation of conveyors underneath those silos.
Bartlett officials say construction is progressing well and remains on schedule.
The new elevator will have 1 million bushels of grain capacity and three high-speed truck dumps.
They will begin operating September 15th and they are contracting grain from farmers now for the 2012 harvest.
