Citizens Remember Former Maur Hill Football Coach
04/10/2012

This past weekend, the community of Atchison and Maur Hill Mount Academy School lost one of its most successful football coaches.

John Flynn passed away Saturday at the age of 68.

He got his coaching start at Saint Peter and Paul High School in Seneca.

He then came to Maur Hill Mount Academy in 1977 and then led the football team to an undefeated season and a state title in his third year as head coach in 1979.

Flynn coached the team to a second state title in 1992 and a runner-up finish in 1984.

Current Maur Hill Athletic Director Richard Hunninghake (Hen-nee-hock-ee) first interacted with Coach Flynn as a player under him in Seneca before becoming an assistant under Flynn for several years at Maur Hill.

He says on the field, no one was more prepared for a game than Coach Flynn.

Kevin Cummings played middle linebacker and center under Flynn from 1986 through 89.

Flynn coached the football program until 1996.

He was also a business instructor at the schools, also having a brief stint as head baseball coach after they re-instituted the program.

He became Athletic Director in 1992 and held the position until 2004.

Flynn continued teaching until retiring in 2009.

John Flynn leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Patty, two daughters, Molly and Margaret, a son, John Matthew, and a sister, Judy.
