Atchison County teenagers are being given an incentive to stay SAFE by buckling up while in their vehicles while statistics in the county continue to improve for citizens wearing their seat belts.
The Atchison County Sheriff’s Office is in its second year of participation in the statewide Seatbelts Are For Everyone program.
Sheriff John Calhoon was in Effingham earlier this week to present gift cards to a selected group of teens signed up for the program at ACCHS.
He describes what the students had to do to qualify.

A selected individual with a clean record all year could be a recipient of an iPad or Kindle at the end of the enforcement year.
The county saw a 13 percent increase in the county and one percent increase in the city of Atchison for those wearing their seatbelts in 2010-11 compared to the previous year.
That accumulates for a seven percent increase overall for the county.
Sheriff Calhoon anticipates an increase in percentage when 2011-12 statistics will be released last month.
Additionally, Atchison Police participated in a two week SAFE program enforcement period near the Atchison High School last month.
There were 12 citations issued to students not wearing their seatbelts during that period and six non-students, which is down by four students and two for non-students from 2011.
