(KAIR) -- Atchison County Commissioners on Monday passed a resolution asking the Kansas Attorney General for a six month extension from a new law allowing permit holders to carry handguns into county-owned buildings.
The exemption request is for the Atchison County Courthouse, Atchison Senior Village and Atchison County Community Corrections.
Commissioner Mike Bodenhausen says the Commission will leave the decision on the status on weapons being allowed in Memorial Hall in Atchison to the Memorial Hall trustees.
The new law, which takes effect July 1, would allow permit holders to conceal carry weapons in state and municipal buildings.
However, local governments can seek an exemption until January 1st.
Many surrounding county commissions have also requested an exemption from the law, while the City of Atchison will allow the law to take effect in city owned buildings.
