(KAIR) -- The Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office has come to a conclusion regarding the cause of a fire last week at 1219 Kansas Avenue.
According to Atchison Fire Chief Mike McDermed, after authorities assessed the home and conducted interviews, the Fire Marshal believes the fire began when a candle was placed in the trash, but was not fully extinguished.
That caused the trashcan to catch fire, which then spread to the kitchen.
Two women escaped the home and their pets were rescued by fire crews.
One of the women was taken to the Atchison Hospital and subsequently treated for smoke inhalation and abrasions, then released. She suffered the injuries after she made numerous attempts to rescue her pets inside the home.
