Atchison Co. Commissioners Reduce Solid Waste Fees
12/06/2012

(KAIR) -- Ideas were tossed around Wednesday morning in round five of discussion of the assessed solid waste fee on property taxes about amending the pay structure of the fee.

Earlier in the week, County Commissioner Jeff Schuele suggested a tier structured rate cut for certain solid waste fees.

In Wednesday’s meeting, Commissioner Mike Bodenhausen suggested to Solid Waste Project Manager Chase Brunick that it could be budgeted to give fair cuts across the board.

These proposals still didn’t satisfy small business owner Jack Bower.

Schuele says the formula wasn’t a SWAG, but an assessment from Heineke LLC.

Brunick then added that rescinding wouldn’t be feasible.

Commissioners ultimately voted to cut the fee 50 percent for non-residences only two to one, with Commissioner Bodenhausen voting nay, citing his desire to cut further.

Schuele says they still plan to conduct the appeals process as scheduled and necessary.

He says they plan to mail out a new statement to those affected by the amendment, as well as a separate one for residential users.

Schuele also says plans are beginning to create a solid waste committee by early 2013 that fall in line with state statute with a cross section of representation from the county, as well as a countywide summit in Effingham in January.
