(KAIR) -- The elevator in the Atchison County Courthouse is now ADA compliant and ready for use.
Commissioners, media and employees were among the first to try out the elevator after Commissioners signed authorization to pay for the project moments before the test Wednesday morning.
Melanie Tuttle with River Bluff Architects says the project came in a little above the initial estimates but will be worth it in the long run.

The final tally commissioners approved for the elevator itself was around seven percent above the estimates, totaling at 255 thousand 867 dollars, largely due to change orders.
The process to get the compliant elevator was three years in the making, largely because of the application process for a matching funds grant from the Heritage Charitable Trust.
The design phase started in February this year and a bid from Hundley Construction was accepted in late spring.
The project also included renovation of the women’s restroom on the second floor and electrical upgrades.
The project was completed two months ahead of schedule.
