Atchison County Budget Workshops Continue
07/19/2012

(KAIR) -- Around a half dozen Atchison County departments or entities made their budget proposals to County Commissioners this week.

Those included the Register of Deeds, Atchison County Lake, Atchison County Extension, Achievement Services, Courts and the Multi-County Health Department.

The Register of Deeds office requested 86 thousand dollars, a marginal increase.

With the retirement of longtime Register of Deeds Marlene Wagner, Commissioners discussed ideas of reforms in the office.

County Commissioner Jeff Schuele describes the potential upgrades.

Court Clerk Donna Oswald made a budget request of 52 thousand 695 dollars, a marginal increase which covers only operating expenses, as the State of Kansas provides funding for the remainder of their services.

Schuele says discussion was made about the viability of having a multi-county health department when County Health proposed their budget.

This week the Commission heard a 679 thousand dollar tax subsidy proposal from Techs Inc. from Holton to run a county-wide EMS service.

Schuele says the proposal would have a significant increase for citizens in advanced life support and basic life support.

He says Commissioners will take the proposal under advisement as they continue to decide on a Countywide EMS provider.

Commissioners also heard an update on the ADA elevator at the courthouse.

Schuele says they have made significant gains in the progress and are now back on pace for their December 2012 completion.

He says the elevator shaft is expected to arrive at the end of August.
