Five area students have been named as recipients of scholarships to attend one of the Regional Centers of Highland Community College.
Highland has Regional Centers in Atchison, Holton, Marysville, Perry, Sabetha, and Wamego.
The scholarship recipients were selected by a committee comprised of HCC personnel working at these Centers.
Recipients of scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year are Jamie Pitts of Holton, Dusty Ray of Marysville, Kristen Ray from Marysville, Mindy Stevens of Valley Falls, and Dalton Torneden from Lawrence.
To qualify for the HCC Regional Scholarship, applicants were required to submit a personal resume, an HCC degree plan, and a 500-word Statement of Purpose addressing his or her four to five educational and professional goals explaining how a degree from HCC would contribute to the achievement of those goals.
To be eligible for the HCC Regional Scholarships, students must be Kansas residents, seeking a degree from HCC, enrolled in at least six credit hours at an HCC Regional Center, have completed at least 12 credit hours from an HCC Regional Center, have earned an overall GPA of at least 2.5 by June 1, 2012, and will use the scholarship for courses offered at one or more Regional Center.
The scholarships are $500 per semester and renewable if the student maintains a grade point average of 2.0 or higher while attending an HCC Regional Center.
