Atchison County officials are taking steps to make sure unnecessary fires don't arise during what is expected to be a generally dry 2012.
Atchison County Commissioners unanimously rescinded two old resolutions and adopted a new one in their regular meeting this (Wednesday) morning.
Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon says the new resolution requires anyone burning in Atchison County outside of Atchison city limits to have a burn permit.

The resolution also gives Commissioners or the Emergency Preparedness Director authority to issue a burn ban whenever conditions permit instead of the next regular meeting of the Commissioners.
Sheriff Calhoon also says Commissioners have asked the sheriff’s department to increase fire related enforcement.

The Sheriff says there were two reported grass fires in Atchison County Tuesday.
The first occurred around 4:12 yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon near Atchison County State Lake and Pawnee Road in the north part of the county.
Shannon and Walnut Township fire crews responded to the fire that was isolated to the west side of the lake and it was contained just before 5.
A second isolated fire was reported at 8:16 Tuesday evening at 6089 Bourbon Road near Muscotah.
Calhoon says Lancaster and Effingham fire crews were able to contain that fire quickly.
He says damage amounts and the cause for each fire are unknown.
A reminder that Atchison County is under a burn ban until further notice.
