(KLZA)-- The Falls City Board of Education approved two hires and two resignations Monday night.
Barb Watlington, Family & Consumer Science Teacher in grades 6 – 12 and FCCLA sponsor, who has worked in District 56 for 35 years has resigned in order to retire. School Psychologist Kelly Juilfs resignation was also approved.
The Board approved the hiring of Kris Vrtiska of Falls City as a Speech & Language Pathologist. John Furrow has been hired as the Instrumental Band Director for grades 6 –12. Furrow is currently in the Band Department at Norfolk High School. Previously he was the Band Instructor at Falls City Sacred Heart.
Superintendent Tim Heckinlively said Watlington’s position could be very difficult to fill since most colleges no longer support or have such a program, even though a number of the things taught by a person in that position, are required for a school district to be accredited.
Heckinlively said the administration believes a resignation in the high school science department can be absorbed and handled by current staff. He also noted they are looking to hire a second grade teacher while possibly absorbing a resignation of a South School elementary teacher.
Two Special Education paraeducator positions are also expected to need to be filled.
