(KTNC) - Twenty teams of 10-to-14 year olds will converge on Humboldt High School this weekend for a southeast Nebraska Lego Robotics competition.
Cindy Stalder is helping coordinate the “First Lego League” event, which begins at 8:30 Saturday morning and continues until mid-afternoon. (play audio :26)
The winners from the Humboldt competition will advance to the state competition February 16th in Ashland.
Stalder says the kids have built robots to find solutions to real world problems. The First Lego League chooses a broad theme each year, and this year’s theme is “Senior Solutions,” and Stalder says the four teams from Humboldt have come up with different ideas under that theme. (play audio :24)
In addition to the robotics competition, Stalder says the teams are also judged on how they apply a set of core values. (play audio :19)
Teams for Saturday’s competition will come from throughout southeast Nebraska. Some are school teams – including four from Humboldt and a few from Pawnee City – while others can come from after school programs or children who are home-schooled.
The competition is open to the public, with no admission charge. The robot games will take place in the Humboldt High School Gym. The competition begins at 8:30, with a break for lunch at 11:30, and should conclude at about 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
