(KAIR) -- The Atchison area may soon get a true walking and biking trail in the near future.
Atchison County Commissioners gave support to pursue grants for a joint project with the city of Atchison.
City officials and a representative of MO-KAN met with commissioners, expressing their desire to create the trail on the edge of city limits into the county along River Road in 2014.
County Commissioner Jeff Schuele says a majority of the project would be grant funded.

Schuele says the trail, still pending Atchison City Commissioner approval, would be strictly for walking and biking only.

An official County Commissioner vote to go with the project won’t come until next year.
In other business, Commissioners met with outgoing Sheriff John Calhoon on the transition to the term of Sheriff-elect Jack Laurie.
Calhoon inquired about the status of the other positions he holds.
Currently, Calhoon is the Director of Joint Communications, the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer and Coordinator of Purchase and Fuel Fleet cards for Department Heads.
Schuele says the County Clerk’s Office will tentatively assume the duties of the cards, while no decisions have been made on who will assume the other roles.
Calhoon says he has met with Laurie for early discussions on the transition.
Commissioners also approved court-appointed attorney contracts for Rex Lane, Andrew Werring and Robert Campbell.
