(KTNC) - A Peru State College student and professor have earned awards from the Nebraska Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
The organization recently named Peru State senior Katlyn Donovan the Physical Education Major of the Year. Assistant Professor of Education, Dr. Kyle Ryan, was named the Sport and Exercise Science Professor of the Year.
Donovan is a Greeley, Nebraska native, double majoring in K-12 health and physical education, as well as sport and exercise science. She’s the president of the Physical Education, Activity, and Kinesiology Students of Peru, a member of the Bobcat volleyball team, and an NAIA Scholar Athlete.
She recently completed the prestigious Great Plains Public Health Training Center Student Summer Fellowship Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Public Health. During the fellowship, Donovan helped rural Nebraska health departments educate citizens about cancer prevention and obesity. She developed and implemented plans to respond to areas of need and participated in outreach and case management services for populations with little access to care.
Dr. Ryan, who came to Peru State in 2009, was honored for his work coordinating the Children’s Health, Activity and Nutrition Community Engagement – or CHANCE – Initiative. That is a partnership between Peru State, Auburn Public Schools and the Auburn Family Health Center.
Dr. Ryan’s current research interests include neuromechanics, community-based participatory research regarding obesity intervention and prevention, and the effectiveness of academic service learning.
