A reporter for The New York Times, who was scheduled to give a presentation next month at Peru State College, has died. Anthony Shadid died of an apparent asthma attack while on a reporting assignment in Syria.
According to a Times photographer who was traveling with Shadid, he began to show symptoms of asthma as they were beginning to leave Syria on Thursday, and the symptoms escalated to a fatal attack.
According to a New York Times report, the 43-year-old Shadid had been reporting inside Syria for a week, gathering information on the Free Syrian Army and other armed elements of the resistance to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
Anthony Shadid joined the New York Times in 2009. He had also worked for the Associated Press, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post. He won Pulizer Prizes in 2004 and 2010 for his reporting of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and subsequent occupation. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his coverage of Lebanon in 2007 and of the Arab Spring uprisings over the past year. Shadid had been scheduled to speak at Peru State College on March 16th as part of the college’s Distinguished Speaker Series.
