(KLZA)-- One topic that did not come up during Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts Town Hall meeting in Falls City Friday afternoon was the death penalty.
The Nebraska Legislature voted to abolish the death penalty in Nebraska during the 2015 session, overriding the Governors veto. Since then Ricketts has been a staunch supporter of a petition drive to put the question to voters in 2016, event contributing to the fund supporting a petition drive to get the measure to the ballot.
Following the Town Hall meeting MSC News asked the Governor to comment on the death penalty.
Ricketts says while neither Nebraska residents nor he relish the idea of putting people to death, he feels it is an important tool for public policy to have a death penalty to not only protect the public, but also law enforcement officers, in particular corrections officers.
Ricketts says he hopes Nebraskans have a chance to vote on whether or not to reinstate the death penalty in 2016.
