OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Death penalty opponents who have worked in Nebraska law enforcement are urging voters to retain the Legislature's repeal of capital punishment.
The group that spoke against the punishment on Monday includes a former Lincoln police chief, deputy county attorneys and retired judges. It also featured a former detective who was involved with a death penalty case.
An Omaha police officer and former Nebraska correctional officer says he'd rather see the money spent on the death penalty go to prison employees.
Several of the death penalty critics point to the case of the so-called Beatrice Six, who were convicted in the 1985 rape and murder of a Beatrice woman but later exonerated.
Nebraskans for the Death Penalty has won support from the Nebraska Sheriff's Association and the Nebraska County Attorneys Association.
