(KTNC) - Motorcycle riders are urged to drive with caution on Missouri roads this spring.
The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety says riders should keep an eye out for debris, gravel, and rough road conditions, in the wake of the harsh winter.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials say it’s important to pay special attention to road conditions when planning a ride, even as road crews work to fill and repair damage to roads.
Officials also say it’s important for motorcyclists to wear protective gear, including a DOT-compliant helmet, as they are more vulnerable than passenger vehicle occupants in crashes.
According to Leanna Depue, the executive committee chair for the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, 72 motorcyclists were killed in crashes on Missouri roads in 2013. She says motorcyclists should practice defensive driving and be properly trained and licensed.
The Missouri Motorcycle Safety program oversees education for motorcycle riders at 28 locations around the state. Find locations at www.mmsp.org.
