Beware of Affordable Care Act Scams
(KTNC) - The Better Business Bureau is warning about scams involving the federal government’s Affordable Care Act. Con artists are calling homes saying they’re ready to send your “Obamacare” card and all they need is your personal information.
The Better Business Bureau’s Kimberly Hazen says these are the latest in a long-running string of health care “phishing” scams. She says the caller may claim to need your Medicare, banking, or other personal information to get you your coverage.
If you get one of these calls, she says to just hang up and if they try again, call the police. Hazen says the federal government does most of its work through the mail, so it’s highly unlikely anyone from the federal government is really calling you.
Hazen says the best response to these calls is to hang up and call the agency yourself to learn more. If you repeatedly get these calls, contact your local authorities or contact the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org.
