(KTNC) - Johnson County is set to become the latest Nebraska county to be designated as “Livestock Friendly.”
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture will hold a presentation honoring the designation at a presentation scheduled for 6:45 Friday evening in the Grandstand at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Tecumseh.
Steve Martin with the Department of Agriculture says the Livestock Friendly program is a process that a county goes through, which includes a public hearing by the county board, which must pass a resolution seeking the designation. (play audio :23 “livestock industry.”)
Martin says the designation is similar to any other a county might seek. He says the Department of Agriculture will consider things the county government does to support the livestock industry, including the county’s comprehensive plan, zoning regulations, and letters of support from local businesses. (play audio :31 “years to come.”)
Martin says 21 counties in Nebraska have been designated as livestock friendly.
Lieutenant Governor Lavon Heidemann and state agriculture officials will join Johnson County Board members at Friday’s presentation.
