Broken fire hydrant near house fire
(KAIR) -- During Tuesday’s fire that destroyed an Atchison home, several neighbors and spectators observed a broken fire hydrant across the street to the home, causing fire crews to connect to nearby fire hoses blocks away and drag hoses to the scene.
Fire Chief Mike McDermed says the hydrant has been out of commission since a car struck it during the last major winter storm of the season.
However, he says it did not affect their response time to the fire.

McDermed says he’s been in contact with the Water Department Foreman and says the reason for the delay is due to the degree of difficulty in repair.

McDermed says despite the irony of where the hydrant was located, it’s only one of two hydrants out of service in the city.
