(KAIR) -- In the wake of recent house fires since the beginning of the year in Atchison, including one that was fatal, the Atchison Fire Department is offering tips on how fire can be prevented.
Chief Mike McDermed says a majority of the fires start due to a lack of home and living maintenance.

In the fire that took the life of an elderly Atchison woman last month, a fire detector was discovered, but not connected properly.
McDermed says there’s a service that the fire department offers for those that may be without one or not have one properly functioning.

Additionally, McDermed says it’s the law for homes to have smoke detectors.

McDermed stresses that fire prevention is year-round, not just when fire awareness week occurs every October.
