Red Cross Setting up Shelters in NW Missouri
12/20/2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Red Cross has set up emergency shelters along Interstate U.S. 29, which has been closed in northwest Missouri because of heavy, blowing snow.

The Missouri Department of Transportation closed I-29 from St. Joseph to the Iowa border and near Kansas City International Airport early Thursday after several accidents were reported because of the winter storm.

Kansas City Power & Light also reports about 32,000 power outages in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas. Several area schools are also closed.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the Red Cross has opened two shelters in St. Joseph, at the Salvation Army and at a Ramada Inn, as well as another at church in Rockport. Commercial weigh stations along Interstates 29 and 35 and Missouri 36 are also open as emergency shelters.
