Kansas State High School Activities Association has tallied the votes from all the Class 4A through Class 1A schools across the state to see if the proposed reclassification will be accepted. A majority was needed by each class and with an overall 146 votes of the 290 needed for the proposal to pass. The proposal only gained a majority in Class 4A (39-Yes to 25-No) and only tallying 101 total Yes votes to 189 total No votes, thus not passing and keeping the status quo.
The proposed reclassification was brought up to potentially decrease the discrepancies between enrollment numbers between the schools at the top and bottom of each class, also help with scheduling and possible travel. The proposal suggested that Class 4A be cut down to 48 schools from its current 64. The bottom 16 schools in Class 4A then would move down to Class 3A, thus bumping the bottom 16 schools in 3A to 2A. Would have also changed the playoff format for some of the classes, also.
KSHSAA felt they needed to leave the vote to the potential schools affected by the potential change, thus giving the principals, superintendents, school boards and athletic directors of each Class 4A-1A schools across the state to vote on it. Most schools felt it was in the best interest not to pass the change as it only successfully earned a majority in the vote in Class 4A.
Classification system for high school sports in Kansas is an ongoing issue and looks to continue as is with this latest potential change being denied.
Voting break down:
Class 4A:
Yes = 39 No = 25
Class 3A:
Yes = 17 No = 47
Class 2A:
Yes = 22 No = 42
Class 1A:
Yes = 23 No = 75
Total Votes:
Yes = 101 No = 189
