(KTNC) -- Falls City High School is midway through the first semester of its new One-to-One iPad initiative. The initiative puts an iPad in the hands of every high school student in the district. The devices were issued to students in December, and they’ve begun using them in classes during the second semester.
The School Board got an update on how the technology is being incorporated into the classroom during its meeting on Monday.
Teacher Roger Windle and students Blake Black and Sydney Armbruster explained and demonstrated some of the applications to board members.
The One-to-One iPad Initiative is the result of several years of research and preparation. Superintendent Tim Heckenlively says they first looked into a One-to-One program about five years ago, and decided to go with the iPads about two years ago.
The school district was able to purchase the iPads through a three-year lease-purchase agreement. With the unrolling of the High School iPad Initiative, all students in the district now have access to the technology, though the High School is the only building where each student has a device.
The Middle School, North and South Schools have iPad Labs that are well used by students. Heckenlively says the district plans to transition the current High School iPads to the Middle School after the initial three year lease-purchase agreement to start a One-to-One program in the Middle School.
Heckenlively says the technology is meant to help students adapt to the technology they’ll use in college or when they go into the workforce.
With the iPads, Heckenlively says the Falls City School District now has 1,054 computers. Of those, 113 are desktop computers and 941 – or more than 89-percent – are mobile devices such as laptops and iPads.
