Names of Victims in Fatal Beatrice Fire Released
(AP) -- Authorities have released the names of a woman who died and a man who was burned by a fire that destroyed their camping trailer on the north side of Beatrice.
The woman is identified as 59-year-old Vernia Hogan and the man is identified as 54-year-old David Hogan, her husband. David Hogan was taken to a Lincoln hospital with burns over more than 30-percent of his body.
The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. Monday at the Hoyle North 77 Mobile Home Park. Fire officials say a space heater ignited a bag of clothes that was sitting too close to it inside the trailer.
A neighbor was able to rescue David Hogan, but was not able to save Vernia Hogan.
Another neighbor says the couple had lived in the trailer park for about a year and that one of them used bottled oxygen.
Beatrice Fire Chief Brian Daake says firefighters put out the flames within 15 minutes, but the fire left a gutted, blackened hulk.
